I had an absolutely fantastic time working with my friend, composer, and saxophonist Jacob Thiede on the newly revised version of GESTALT for woodwind! His performance was phenomenal and getting to be in a dedicated electroacoustic theatre, the Merrill Ellis Intermedia Theater, at the University of North Texas was fantastic! Thank you so much Jake and also Yeonsuk and Korlyn for being tablet musicians! Check out the performance here.

I'm incredibly excited for the premiere of all of our new works at the end of the festival! Ghost of Tom (2017)

The “Ghost of Tom” is an American Folk song from the early 1900s. It tells us about a skeleton ghost, and bemoans how cold it would be without any skin. I enjoy teaching this song to Intermediate Elementary students around Halloween and pairing with a simple ghost story, which became the inspiration for this arrangement.

Ghost of Tom (2017) {audio} is an arrangement made with a High School or Junior College Jazz band in mind. In keeping with the traditions surrounding a folk song, it is repetitive with short sections of singing and a solo round. Recording provided courtesy of the 7 O'clock Lab Band at the University of North Texas.

Broken Rain Machine (2016)

I am very proud to announce the completion of a short concert band piece entitled Broken Rain Machine (2016) (audio)! It is meant as a quick and lively concert opener that initially lowers the audiences guard with repetitive rhythms and consonant harmonies before going on the attack.

"...the machine, slowly breaking down over time as the aches and groans of it's failing parts become more and more apparent. The job of creating rain and bringing life to the world has taken it's toll on the machine and the strain becomes deafening. Finally, the machine let's out a final whistle, a sigh of relief as it finally comes to rest."
